It's been a while since we put pen to paper. Business has been good, and there just aren't enough hours in the day.
It seems however that a lot of people out their have plenty of time on their hands and like to spend it on social media. Trial by public opinion is still a fairly new phenom which we have to get our heads around. And does the opinion of one person constitute as 'public opinion'?
A newly opened food concept down our way, has recently had a few scathing reviews on Urban Spoon. As the Spoon is viewed as a bible by some foodies who won't venture out before reading reviews, the power of this venue of social media can't be underestimated. Now, we'd like to make it clear - this new venue is not a customer of Kitchen Couture ( having their own uniforms and branding) so we don't have any vested interest in springing to their defence. However, the injustice of social media really gets our goat!
It's an unfortunate trait of human nature that complaints are voiced loud and clear while compliments are rarely given, even when justly earned. When you read a negative comment on Urban Spoon or a similar site, do you ever ask yourself how many customers didn't write a review? The venue which spiked our comments probably serves 800 customers per day yet the one negative comment will be the one which will be talked about and passed on like the best Chinese Whisper. If you are someone who likes to read Urban Spoon etc, read between the lines. Read all the comments and get a balanced view.
Eating out has become more like a battle for some people wanting to outdo the Sommelier with their wine knowledge and outdo the waiters with their expansive food knowledge. ( You know the type - if I wasn't an accountant, brain surgeon, lawyer or astronaut - I would have been a chef) Sure we all like good food and want value for out hard earned money but eating out is about exactly that - eating out. Out of our own homes where someone else cooks, serves and cleans up after us. We get to just sit there enjoying the company of friends or lovers.
So don't go out looking for faults. Appreciate that the kitchen or floor staff are 3 down due to colds, flu bereavement etc. Enjoy the fact that you're sitting there in your gladrags, looking hipster like enjoying your third glass of wine. Bon Appetite!
Cheers,
The Team at Kitchen Couture
